My mother, God rest her soul, told me as a young lad "If you can't say something good about a person, don't say anything at all." I question the author's advice given that most "talk" in today's American culture is negative, not positive. Bad "talk" sells newspapers, creates fodder for 24-hour cable TV pundits and a 30-year career for Don Imus.
How do you get customers to fill-in the blank ... "I can't believe they _____" ... with a positive comment? Is the advice we got in Public Speaking 101 ... tell'em what you're going to tell'em, tell'em and then tell'em what you told'em ... the best solution to positive talk?
I disagree that most talk is negative. That may be what you hear on the news, but when normal people sit down and talk about your product of service, they're sharing what they find remarkable about what you do.
Word Of Mouth shouldn't be confused with what's being tossed around on national talk shows and highly-read blogs. What is heard around water coolers and in car-pools is much more powerful than something an over-blown talking head blurts out during a ratings sweep.
If you aren't doing anything to give them something to talk about - something remarkable - something that is your "THE" factor - you are wasting your time doing what you do.
There is a great quote that is atributed to Don Quijote de la Mancha. As they are walking through the village the dogs all start barking and Sancho is upset. Don Quijote says something like this to his trusty Sancho:
Let the dogs keep barking Sancho, it's a sign that we are on the move.
--- I agree - it is a sign you are on the move.
I think I prefer moving to standing still -
